The agreement, which was witnessed by senior government officials, sets the stage for a long-term collaboration to enhance telecom services and expand access to modern communication technologies across the region.

In a significant development for Zanzibar’s digital future, Airtel Tanzania  and the Zanzibar Communication and ICT Infrastructure Agency (ZICTIA)  have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the islands’ digital transformation. The agreement, which was witnessed by senior government officials, sets the stage for a long-term collaboration to enhance telecom services and expand access to modern communication technologies across the region.

The partnership focuses on several key areas, including improving broadband connectivity, boosting digital inclusion, and supporting government priorities. The aim is to accelerate the implementation of projects that will directly benefit citizens through advancements in e-government, e-learning, e-health, and e-commerce. According to Zanzibar’s Minister for Infrastructure, Communication, and Transport, Khalid Salum Mohammed, this collaboration is a crucial step towards making digital services a reality for all citizens, especially in underserved communities.

Airtel’s Managing Director, Charles Kamoto, stated that the MoU reflects the company’s commitment to being more than just a telecom operator. The company plans to invest in infrastructure and partnerships that empower local communities. Similarly, ZICTIA’s Director General, Shukuru Awadh Suleiman, highlighted the importance of leveraging private-sector partnerships to unlock the full potential of Zanzibar’s ICT sector. This new chapter in their collaboration is expected to strengthen infrastructure, promote financial inclusion, and position Zanzibar for a future driven by innovation and inclusive growth.
