The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC ) has announced the removal of all unregistered SIM cards from the country’s telecommunications networks, calling it a significant step toward strengthening national and cyber security.
Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida, speaking at a media briefing in Abuja, clarified that while unregistered SIMs have been eliminated, the commission cannot control false names used during registration. He reminded the public that using fake identities to make or receive calls remains an offence under Nigerian law.
Maida outlined measures to maintain industry stability, including a public map set for launch in September to help subscribers identify networks with the best coverage and tariff plans. He also highlighted the need for fresh capital in the sector and the revision of corporate governance guidelines to enhance transparency, accountability, and investor confidence.
On the recent tariff adjustment, Maida noted it was necessary after a decade without cost-reflective pricing, stressing that the commission balanced the interests of operators and subscribers. He added that discussions with state governors are planned to protect telecom infrastructure and address multiple taxation, aiming to improve service delivery and national security.
