Burkina Faso Strengthens Data Protection in Digital Transition Drive
This collaboration sets the foundation for stronger technical cooperation between the two entities, ensuring that every step of Burkina Faso’s digital transition is aligned with international standards of privacy and accountability.
The Ministry of Digital Transition, Postal and Electronic Communications (MTDPCE) and the Commission of Informatics and Liberties (CIL) have reaffirmed their joint commitment to strengthening personal data protection in Burkina Faso’s digital transformation agenda.
During a working session held on September 3, 2025, officials from both institutions discussed strategies to ensure that citizens’ data remains secure and confidential as the country accelerates the rollout of digital platforms and services. The meeting brought together the Minister of Digital Transition, Dr. Aminata Zerbo/Sabane, and the President of CIL, Dr. Halguièta Nassa/Trawina, along with members of the ministerial cabinet.
The discussions focused on embedding data protection principles at the core of all dematerialization projects. Both institutions agreed that compliance with data protection standards must become systematic and mandatory before the deployment of new technologies in government services. This approach, they noted, would not only safeguard citizens’ rights but also build trust in public digital systems.
The session also addressed the challenges posed by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things, all of which heighten the need for responsible and ethical governance. To this end, the ministry emphasized integrating technical data protection requirements into project specifications, while the CIL underscored its role as both regulator and strategic partner for public institutions.
This collaboration sets the foundation for stronger technical cooperation between the two entities, ensuring that every step of Burkina Faso’s digital transition is aligned with international standards of privacy and accountability. The initiative aims to foster a modern, efficient, and resilient administration while building a digital society that respects fundamental rights.
