Nigeria Issues Urgent Warning on Google Chrome Vulnerabilities

September 18, 2025
2 min read

The advisory notes that successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities could allow malicious actors to install programs on a victim’s device, view or delete user data, or even create new user accounts with full administrative rights.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)  has issued a security advisory warning users about multiple vulnerabilities discovered in Google Chrome. According to the Commission, the most severe of these flaws could enable attackers to execute arbitrary code on a user’s system, potentially compromising both personal data and system integrity.

The advisory notes that successful exploitation of the vulnerabilities could allow malicious actors to install programs on a victim’s device, view or delete user data, or even create new user accounts with full administrative rights. Such capabilities place users at significant risk of losing control of their systems and sensitive information.

To mitigate these risks, the NDPC has urged all users to immediately apply the latest updates to Google Chrome. The Commission further recommended operating with standard user rights instead of administrative rights whenever possible, as a way to limit the impact of potential attacks. Users were also advised to exercise caution by avoiding suspicious links, unsolicited attachments, and untrusted websites that could serve as attack vectors.

The Commission stressed that these steps are critical in reducing exposure to cyber threats and ensuring safer browsing experiences. By issuing this advisory, the NDPC reaffirmed its role in safeguarding data privacy and promoting cyber resilience in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
