The Government of Zambia has taken another step forward in its digital transformation agenda with the distribution of over 2,000 computers to local authorities across the country. The Electronic Government Division under the SMART Zambia Institute, in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), officially handed over 1,780 Neo laptops and 220 all-in-one desktop computers to 116 local authorities.
Speaking during the handover, Acting SMART Zambia National Coordinator, Ms. Kasali Musenge, reaffirmed government’s commitment to driving the digital agenda as a way of improving efficiency and strengthening interaction with citizens. She noted that the adoption of digital tools is central to enhancing service delivery and ensuring that government remains accessible and responsive.
MLGRD Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Mr. Nicholas Phiri, expressed gratitude to SMART Zambia for the support, stressing that the computers would significantly improve operational efficiency, promote transparency, and enable real-time service delivery across the councils. He added that the initiative would empower local authorities to deliver services more effectively, aligning with the broader goals of Zambia’s e-government strategy.
Also speaking at the event, MLGRD Permanent Secretary for Administration, Dr. Gabriel Pollen, underscored the ministry’s determination to reaffirm government’s pledge to strengthen local service delivery. He emphasized that the investment in digital infrastructure demonstrates Zambia’s resolve to modernize governance and empower local institutions to better serve communities.
The devices, valued at approximately K9 million, come equipped with advanced tracking features to promote accountability and ensure they are used exclusively for official government work. This safeguard is expected to support secure, efficient, and reliable operations in local authorities while minimizing the risk of misuse.
The rollout of these tools marks a major milestone in Zambia’s ongoing digital transformation journey and highlights the government’s continued investment in technology as a foundation for transparent and citizen-centered governance.
