Kenya Moves to Strengthen Media Sector Amid Rise of AI and Digital Platforms
The engagement focused on the rapid evolution of the media sector, which has shifted from analogue to digital platforms and is now being reshaped by the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
The Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Stephen Isaboke, EBS, today held discussions with the Complaints Committee, staff, and management of the Media Council of Kenya. The engagement focused on the rapid evolution of the media sector, which has shifted from analogue to digital platforms and is now being reshaped by the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
While new technologies offer vast opportunities, Mr. Isaboke noted that they also introduce challenges such as misinformation and disinformation, underscoring the importance of multi-sector collaboration. Kenya’s robust legal framework already supports the sector, with the Media Council mandated to act as a referee to ensure accountability in line with constitutional provisions.
The meeting also explored innovative strategies to strengthen partnerships, enhance teamwork, and modernise systems to keep pace with the fast-changing digital landscape. Mr. Isaboke encouraged the Council to accelerate automation of its services, processes, and procedures, particularly with regard to AI-integrated platforms, in order to remain responsive to emerging realities.
The State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications commended the Council’s ongoing initiatives and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a free, responsible, and vibrant media that informs and engages Kenyans. Mr. Isaboke was accompanied by the Secretary of Information and Broadcasting, Mr. Temesi Mukani.
