His departure marks a significant transition for TLcom and for the wider African venture capital ecosystem, where Sum has been widely recognized as one of its early champions and builders.

Venture capital investor Ido Sum has announced his departure from TLcom Capital , marking the end of a 14-year journey that helped shape Africa’s technology investment landscape.

Sum joined TLcom in 2011 to establish the firm’s Africa platform, playing a key role in positioning the company among the first generation of venture capital investors on the continent. Over the years, TLcom grew alongside Africa’s tech ecosystem, which has transformed from an overlooked space into a sector now attracting billions of dollars in annual investment.

Reflecting on his time at TLcom, Sum highlighted the privilege of working with pioneering founders, entrepreneurs, investors, and colleagues committed not only to building successful companies but also to laying the foundation of Africa’s venture ecosystem.

With nearly two decades of experience as both founder and investor, Sum described Africa’s tech industry as his “second home” and reaffirmed his long-term commitment to contributing to its growth, even as he embarks on a new chapter beyond TLcom.

Over the coming weeks, he will transition out of the firm while preparing to explore fresh opportunities. Though details of his next move have not yet been disclosed, Sum noted that new ideas are beginning to take shape, with upcoming travel planned between London, Cape Town, Tel Aviv, and San Francisco.

His departure marks a significant transition for TLcom and for the wider African venture capital ecosystem, where Sum has been widely recognized as one of its early champions and builders.
