Chad’s Telecom Minister Presses Airtel on Poor Network Quality

September 30, 2025
2 min read

The Ministry emphasized that telecom services remain unsatisfactory, with users across the country frequently facing disruptions and lack of coverage.

On Monday, September 29, 2025, the Minister of Telecommunications, Digital Economy and Digitalization of the Administration, Dr. Boukar Michel, met with senior executives from Airtel to address persistent concerns over poor mobile network service in Chad.

The Airtel delegation, which included the General Manager for Regulation and the General Manager for Supply Chain, visited the minister immediately upon arrival in N’Djamena. Discussions centered on the operator’s service quality, network operations, and investment commitments.

The Ministry emphasized that telecom services remain unsatisfactory, with users across the country frequently facing disruptions and lack of coverage. The government expects noticeable improvements before the end of 2025. Authorities also highlighted that Airtel’s previously announced investment of 16 billion CFA francs must translate into concrete results. Particular attention was placed on energy challenges, with a recommendation for the company to adopt hybrid power solutions combining thermal and solar energy to ensure stable operations at transmission sites.

During the meeting, ARCEP Tchad raised concerns that Airtel continues to rank among the lowest in terms of service quality, despite repeated visits from senior management and ongoing efforts. Daily disruptions in both the capital and rural areas were noted as having negative impacts on the country’s economy, social life, and security.

Airtel executives acknowledged the issues and reiterated the company’s commitment to strengthening its infrastructure, expanding equipment capacity, and improving nationwide coverage to provide more reliable services for consumers.
