Egypt Launches National Smart Cities Strategy to Drive Sustainable Urban Growth
By embedding digital transformation at the heart of city development, the strategy strengthens Egypt’s competitiveness in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
Egypt’s Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, has officially announced the launch of the National Smart Cities Strategy during the third day of the World Urban Forum. Speaking at a press conference, he described the initiative as a major step toward reimagining Egypt’s urban landscape—upgrading earlier generations of new cities, revitalizing existing urban centers, and laying the foundation for sustainable, digitally enabled cities of the future.
According to El-Sherbiny, the strategy represents more than infrastructure upgrades; it is a blueprint for creating interconnected and innovation-driven urban environments. Egypt’s smart cities are designed to foster economic, social, and environmental resilience while integrating advanced technologies and sustainable practices across all aspects of daily life.
The initiative is expected to enhance living standards, attract global talent and investment, and strike a balance between economic prosperity and environmental stewardship. By embedding digital transformation at the heart of city development, the strategy strengthens Egypt’s competitiveness in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
The National Smart Cities Strategy is also aligned with broader sustainable development objectives. It focuses on expanding technological infrastructure and introducing smart services in healthcare, education, transportation, and energy. These improvements will enable efficient resource management while delivering modern solutions to meet citizens’ evolving needs.
El-Sherbiny emphasized that smart cities will also function as engines of economic growth, supporting innovation and entrepreneurship in key sectors such as technology, logistics, and renewable energy. The resulting impact includes job creation, stronger foreign investment flows, and broader community development.
On the social front, citizens will benefit from more accessible and efficient services—from smart classrooms and remote healthcare to intelligent mobility systems—all designed to improve quality of life. At the same time, sustainability remains a central pillar, with initiatives to reduce emissions, integrate renewable energy, and develop green transport options to protect the environment.
The strategy further aims to modernize governance by embedding digital management systems into public administration. These systems will strengthen transparency, improve government responsiveness, and streamline communication between officials and citizens.
With this launch, Egypt signals its determination to embrace smart urban development as a cornerstone of its national progress, advancing both its economic strength and the well-being of its people.
