Rwanda and SpaceX Partner to Expand Starlink Satellite Internet Nationwide
This agreement clears the way for the installation of the inaugural Starlink gateway, which will be directly linked to the national fiber backbone.
Rwanda and SpaceX have reached a landmark agreement to accelerate the rollout of Starlink satellite internet in the country, with plans to install Rwanda’s first dedicated Starlink gateway by the end of 2025.
The announcement followed a meeting between Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Hon. Yves Iradukunda, and SpaceX leadership. The discussions reviewed current Starlink operations in Rwanda, which already serve around 5,000 users, and focused on scaling access nationwide.
A key outcome of the talks was the finalization of a spectrum agreement with the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) and the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA). This agreement clears the way for the installation of the inaugural Starlink gateway, which will be directly linked to the national fiber backbone. Officials anticipate this will significantly improve internet speed, capacity, and reliability for users across the country.
Both parties emphasized the importance of digital inclusion, particularly in rural areas. Plans include expanding connectivity to schools and communities, leveraging lessons from pilot programs in Rwanda and successful deployments in countries such as Mexico and Niger.
The partnership also aims to explore creative financing and donor partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability. Beyond general connectivity, Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet is expected to support key sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, and rural service delivery.
This collaboration reflects Rwanda’s strategic approach to leveraging satellite technology to fast-track its digital transformation and narrow the digital divide between urban centers and remote areas.
