South Africa Unveils Modernised National Broadband Backbone to Power Digital Growth

South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has announced the launch of Broadband Infraco’s modernised national broadband backbone. According to Minister Solly Malatsi, the upgraded network is designed to deliver faster speeds, greater resilience, and open-access connectivity — providing a foundation for advancements in e-learning, fintech, artificial intelligence, and e-government.
Malatsi noted that the upgrade would empower citizens to address local challenges, enable small businesses to thrive, and ensure reliable connectivity for learners and entrepreneurs across the country. He emphasized that the initiative is aimed at transforming digital access into economic opportunity while positioning South Africa as Africa’s emerging technology hub.
