The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has announced significant progress under the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project, achieving over 80% implementation and marking a milestone in the modernization of Tanzania’s higher education landscape. The update was shared during a meeting with the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF), where UDSM Vice Chancellor Prof. William A. L. Anangisye highlighted how HEET is redefining the role of universities in digital learning, skills development, and industrial innovation.
As part of the initiative, 21 new academic buildings have been constructed across UDSM campuses in Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Kagera, and Zanzibar, significantly improving access to quality education and supporting national socio-economic development goals.
The project has also advanced digital transformation within higher education. Through HEET, UDSM has developed and deployed over 1,000 online courses, serving more than 39,000 students via a newly established 10Gbps high-speed network, which enhances the learning experience and supports hybrid education models.
According to Prof. Liberato Haule, UDSM-HEET Deputy Coordinator, the project has modernized learning environments, strengthened university-industry linkages, and positioned the institution as a regional model for innovation and inclusivity.
TEF Chairperson, Mr. Deodatus Balile, commended UDSM for setting a national benchmark in educational transformation, emphasizing that the university’s achievements under HEET demonstrate the power of strategic investment and collaboration in elevating Tanzania’s higher education standards.
