Burkina Faso Launches webSIG Platform to Map National Telecommunication Infrastructure
This innovative platform, derived from the Digital Development Manager Scheme (SDAN), represents a major advancement in Burkina Faso’s digital transformation strategy and its pursuit of an inclusive and sovereign digital economy.
The Ministry of Digital Transition, Postal and Electronic Communications of Burkina Faso, headed by Dr. Aminata Zerbo/Sabane, officially launched the webSIG platform of the Digital Development Observatory (OAN) on Friday, October 24, 2025, in Ouagadougou. This innovative platform, derived from the Digital Development Manager Scheme (SDAN), represents a major advancement in Burkina Faso’s digital transformation strategy and its pursuit of an inclusive and sovereign digital economy.
The launch ceremony brought together key stakeholders from the telecommunications sector, including representatives from the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP), mobile network operators, and Internet service providers. Their participation underscored the collaborative nature of this initiative, which seeks to strengthen coordination among public and private actors involved in the development of digital infrastructure across the country.
The webSIG platform serves as a strategic tool for the collection, analysis, and mapping of digital infrastructure data nationwide. By providing a comprehensive and up-to-date view of telecommunication networks and assets, it enables stakeholders to better coordinate their activities, optimize investments, minimize duplication in infrastructure projects, and ultimately enhance citizens’ access to telecommunication services.
According to the Ministry, the platform complies with international standards for mapping electronic communications infrastructure and provides decision-makers with reliable, evidence-based data to guide national digital policy. Dr. Zerbo/Sabane highlighted the importance of this capability, emphasizing that access to accurate and current data is crucial for efficient planning, equitable development, and the effective management of national digital resources.
In her closing remarks, the Minister expressed appreciation to all partners, including regulators, operators, and institutions, whose efforts contributed to the realization of this project on a national scale. She urged them to make full use of the new platform as a catalyst for “fair and shared decisions” that promote national development.
Dr. Zerbo/Sabane also reiterated that, under the leadership of His Excellency Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Faso, Burkina Faso is committed to placing digital innovation at the heart of its national sovereignty and development agenda. She called on all stakeholders to view the webSIG platform as a tool of operational sovereignty—a means to ensure data sovereignty, informed public planning, and evidence-based decision-making in the digital era.
