The launch marks a significant advancement in Ethiopia’s financial digitalization agenda, reinforcing M-PESA Ethiopia’s commitment to providing accessible, secure, and interoperable payment solutions that empower consumers, merchants, and financial institutions to participate fully in the digital economy.

M-PESA Ethiopia  has announced the successful integration of its mobile money platform with EthSwitch,  Ethiopia’s national payment network, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward financial inclusion and interoperability.

The integration enables seamless money transfers and payments between M-PESA and 15 participating banks and mobile wallets across Ethiopia, with more integrations planned in the coming weeks. Through this development, M-PESA customers can now send funds directly from their mobile wallets to any bank account connected to EthSwitch or make payments to merchants using bank-issued EthQR codes. Conversely, bank customers without M-PESA accounts can send money to M-PESA wallets or make merchant payments by scanning M-PESA EthQR codes through their respective mobile banking applications.

Powered by EthSwitch’s secure national payment infrastructure, the service facilitates real-time transactions that comply with Ethiopia’s financial standards and regulations. The integration represents a major step toward building an interoperable financial ecosystem, supporting the country’s goal of expanding access to digital financial services for individuals and businesses alike.

M-PESA users can access the feature through the M-PESA app, while customers of the participating institutions — including the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, CBE Birr, Addis International Bank, Amhara Bank, Awash Bank, Bunna Bank, Cooperative Bank of Oromia (Coop Pay), Enat Bank, Lion International Bank, KAAFI Microfinance, Siinqee Bank, Siket Bank, Tsehay Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Zemen Bank — can find M-PESA listed among the transfer options within their mobile banking platforms.
