NTT DATA Brings Cutting-Edge Connectivity to 800 km Nedbank Gravel Burn Adventure

October 31, 2025
3 min read

NTT DATA will deliver the secure connectivity and network infrastructure needed to keep more than 500 riders, media and event support crew safe and connected across one of South Africa’s most remote and beautiful regions.

NTT DATA,  a global leader in AI, digital business and technology services, announced its role as technology partner for the inaugural Nedbank  Gravel Burn – a seven-stage, 800-kilometre gravel bike race from Knysna to Shamwari.

NTT DATA will deliver the secure connectivity and network infrastructure needed to keep more than 500 riders, media and event support crew safe and connected across one of South Africa’s most remote and beautiful regions.

Kevin Vermaak, the founder of the Nedbank Gravel Burn, said that even before a route had been established, digital technology was always intended to be an integral part of the event’s DNA. He explained that the goal was to create a platform that would not only scale effectively but also meaningfully enhance how participants and fans experience the race — from their first interaction to post-event engagement. He added that NTT DATA had been chosen as the preferred partner to achieve this vision.

Providing connectivity in the middle of the Karoo is no small feat. With limited existing mobile coverage in many of the Burn Camp locationsa dedicated solution was designed and implemented over several months. NTT DATA has developed a robust communication network ensuring reliable connectivity across every stage of the race, enabling essential services such as emergency coordination, medical support, race timing, results management and media distribution.

NTT DATA has a strong history in cycling. For the past 10 years, the company has been the Official Technology Partner of the Absa Cape Epic, a role built on its Dimension Data legacy. During this time, NTT DATA has supported South African cycling and mountain biking. This partnership highlights its commitment to using technology to connect people, boost performance, and drive innovation in sport and beyond.

Connectivity at the Nedbank Gravel Burn will not only enhance safety but also elevate the overall race experience. Wi-Fi will be available at designated areas within the Burn Camps for the riders, media and event support crew while at the same time creating digital detox zones within the Burn Camps to promote connection, reflection and conversation that mirror the spirit of the Karoo.

“The Nedbank Gravel Burn captures the essence of innovation and endurance. We’ve built a secure, high-performance network in one of the most challenging environments on the continent. It’s a powerful example of how technology can bring people together, enhance safety and transform experiences, even in the most remote locations.”

Marc Jessiman, Vice President of Technology Solutions, NTT DATA South Africa
