Africa Takes a Bold Step Toward Digital Autonomy with the Launch of UniCloud’s Sovereign Cloud Platform
The initiative positions the company at the forefront of efforts to empower the continent through secure, scalable, and locally hosted cloud infrastructure, tailored specifically for African enterprises.
UniCloud Africa has officially launched its Sovereign Cloud Platform under the theme “One Cloud, One Africa,” marking a transformative step in Africa’s pursuit of digital and economic independence. The initiative positions the company at the forefront of efforts to empower the continent through secure, scalable, and locally hosted cloud infrastructure, tailored specifically for African enterprises.
As a pan-African cloud services provider, UniCloud Africa is driving the growth of the region’s cloud computing market, which is valued at approximately $5 billion. The new sovereign platform offers Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and advanced data storage and backup solutions — all hosted locally to ensure compliance with national data protection regulations. This local hosting approach is designed to minimize foreign exchange dependency, promote data sovereignty, and give organizations full ownership and control over their digital assets.
The launch event highlighted UniCloud Africa’s broader mission to promote digital independence across the continent. The platform offers 100 percent in-country data hosting, zero data egress fees, local currency billing, and a 99.999 percent uptime, adhering to global security and continuity standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 22301. These features reflect UniCloud Africa’s commitment to building trust, transparency, and accessibility into the digital ecosystem.
Chief Executive Officer Ladi Okuneye described the platform as a foundation for Africa’s digital and financial independence. He noted that African enterprises have long faced financial and compliance challenges when relying on offshore cloud providers. The new platform, he explained, provides world-class infrastructure backed by local billing and the assurance of ISO-certified, in-country data management — giving African businesses the peace of mind and flexibility they need to thrive in a fast-evolving digital economy.
UniCloud Africa’s strategic partnerships with TouchNet, Zadara, OADC, WIOCC, and IXPN form the backbone of its operations, combining advanced technology with reliable infrastructure. TouchNet ensures network reliability and connectivity, Zadara supports AI-ready cloud infrastructure, while collaborations with OADC and WIOCC integrate subsea cables and data centers, enabling ultra-low latency and high-speed connectivity across the continent.
The company’s leadership emphasized that this sovereign cloud initiative will play a crucial role in transforming Africa’s economic landscape by supporting national data sovereignty policies and providing predictable pricing through local billing. UniCloud Africa’s initial rollout includes Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Zambia, Senegal, and Mozambique, with plans to expand into Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, and Morocco in the coming months.
By combining local expertise, cutting-edge technology, and a strong commitment to data sovereignty, UniCloud Africa is setting a new standard for how the continent approaches digital transformation — ensuring that Africa’s digital future is built, managed, and owned by Africans.
