Lesaka Deepens Impact in South Africa’s Township Economies with Expanding Fintech Ecosystem

November 6, 2025
3 min read

Through these initiatives, Lesaka is playing a central role in connecting and empowering South Africa’s township economy.

Lesaka  has emerged as a major fintech enabler in Southern Africa, driving financial inclusion and digital transformation across South Africa’s township economies. With a customer base of more than 90,000 micro merchants and 30,000 small and medium-sized enterprises, the company is demonstrating tangible impact at the grassroots level by providing digital financial tools that empower businesses and individuals in townships and rural communities.

The company’s fintech ecosystem serves as a lifeline for township merchants of all sizes. Its range of solutions includes point-of-sale and card acquiring systems, digital supplier and bill payment platforms, cash and software solutions, as well as access to growth capital. These tools allow township businesses such as spaza shops, taverns, fuel courts, and restaurants to operate more efficiently, reduce risk, and improve profitability. Lesaka’s supplier payments platform, used by more than 700 suppliers, has eliminated the need for high-risk cash transactions, making it easier for merchants to restock and manage their finances securely. The company also provides short-term and growth capital loans based on merchant data, enabling business owners to access funds within hours for expansion or operational needs.

Lesaka’s influence extends into the township fuel and hospitality sectors, where it provides software that simplifies business operations and supports faster decision-making. Township fuel court operators now rely on its systems to improve efficiency, while restaurant and tavern owners use its hospitality tools to manage stock, track sales, and design promotions. The digital transformation of this sector, estimated to be worth R150 billion annually, reflects the growing adoption of technology in township-based enterprises.

On the consumer front, Lesaka serves 1.7 million Sassa grant beneficiaries, offering tailored financial services including micro-loans, insurance, bill payments, and digital banking. Its personal loans are small, affordable, and structured to promote responsible borrowing. The company has also developed low-cost insurance products such as funeral and pensioner plans designed to meet the needs of low-income households. Through its expanding network of over 220 EasyPay Everywhere branches, Lesaka ensures that consumers can access its services conveniently, whether in person or digitally.

Beyond grant recipients, Lesaka’s services extend to township consumers more broadly. Its bill payment and value-added services allow users to settle monthly utilities, purchase airtime or data, and buy digital vouchers for easy spending without requiring a formal bank account. By combining technology, accessibility, and community-focused financial solutions, Lesaka has embedded itself in the economic fabric of township life.

Through these initiatives, Lesaka is playing a central role in connecting and empowering South Africa’s township economy. Its expanding fintech network continues to provide both merchants and consumers with safer, faster, and more inclusive access to financial services, driving growth and resilience in communities that have historically been underserved by traditional financial systems.
