MTN Partners with Government to Launch Bor ICT Hub and Online Learning Programs
The hub, financed by MTN, will offer training programs for young people in Greater Jonglei and provide internet services to the local community.
The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services officially launched an ICT Hub in Bor Town on Tuesday, aiming to empower youth in Jonglei State through digital skills and internet access. The hub, financed by MTN, will offer training programs for young people in Greater Jonglei and provide internet services to the local community.
Speaking at the launch, Telecommunication Undersecretary Engineer Thomas Gatkuoth Nyak, representing the National Minister of ICT and Postal Services, emphasized the transformative potential of the hub. He stated that the facility “will bring economic and social change in Greater Jonglei,” highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering digital literacy and innovation among the youth.
However, Jonglei State Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Honorable Nyalele, who represented the Governor at the event, urged the youth to use computers and the internet responsibly. She stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence and cautioned against misuse of digital tools. Honorable Nyalele also called on MTN to extend its services beyond Bor Town, noting that communication networks remain weak across the state’s nine other counties.
Responding to these concerns, MTN CEO Mapula Bodibe announced a partnership with Coursera.org to provide free online courses and certifications for South Sudanese citizens. This initiative aims to expand digital learning opportunities and help youth develop skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
The launch of the ICT Hub reflects ongoing efforts by both the government and private sector partners to enhance digital access, skills development, and connectivity in South Sudan, particularly in underserved regions like Jonglei State.
