Cameroon Strengthens Digital Safety Campaign with Device Certification Guidelines

November 10, 2025
2 min read

With the rapid increase in mobile device usage and digital access, the TRB emphasizes that device certification is essential not just for technical compliance, but also for service quality, network security, public health, and overall user protection.

Cameroon’s Telecommunications Regulatory Board (TRB) has issued a reminder to consumers on the critical importance of using certified and compliant digital devices, including phones, tablets, and other terminal equipment. With the rapid increase in mobile device usage and digital access, the TRB emphasizes that device certification is essential not just for technical compliance, but also for service quality, network security, public health, and overall user protection.

Device certification ensures that equipment meets Cameroon’s regulatory and technical standards, preventing network disruptions, safety risks, and performance issues. Non-certified devices, often sourced from informal markets or counterfeit suppliers, can interfere with mobile networks, degrade call quality, slow internet browsing, and even compromise communication security. These problems, often imperceptible to users, directly affect the reliability and performance of telecommunication services.

The TRB notes that the use of non-compliant devices undermines the investments mobile operators make in network expansion and upgrades. Consequences include reduced internet speeds, frequent call drops, increased vulnerability to cyberattacks, and overcrowded frequency bands. By choosing certified devices, consumers help maintain smoother network operations, safer communications, and a sustainable telecommunications sector.

Certified devices also play a role in protecting public health. Uncertified equipment may emit uncontrolled levels of electromagnetic radiation, posing potential risks, especially with prolonged or close-range usage. Devices approved by the TRB undergo rigorous testing to ensure emissions remain within safe limits.

Consumers can identify certified devices through TRB labels affixed by authorized importers or distributors and by consulting the TRB’s public database of approved equipment. Buyers are encouraged to verify TRB certification labels, request accreditation documents from sellers, and reference the official list of authorized vendors on the TRB website.

Beyond individual safety and service quality, device certification supports Cameroon’s digital sovereignty by controlling technological flows, strengthening national cybersecurity, and protecting citizens from the risks of the grey market. The TRB urges consumers, importers, and distributors to act responsibly, highlighting that using certified devices is not just a technical requirement but a civic commitment to a secure, reliable, and inclusive digital environment.
