The initiative aims to position the UAE as a global leader in 6G technologies, building on the country’s successful deployment of 5G.

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA)  has launched the United Arab Emirates’ 6G Initiative, marking a major step toward the development of next-generation telecommunications. The announcement took place during the inaugural meeting of the 6G Committee, which brought together federal and local government entities, telecommunications providers, universities, research centers, and leading global mobile technology companies.

The initiative aims to position the UAE as a global leader in 6G technologies, building on the country’s successful deployment of 5G. With 5G coverage now exceeding 99.5% of populated areas and over 23,000 sites serving more than 10 million subscribers, the UAE is preparing for the post-5G era by integrating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and satellite networks to enable future applications.

The 6G Committee will focus on creating a comprehensive national ecosystem for next-generation connectivity. Its objectives include fostering collaboration among national partners, establishing research and innovation programs through universities and research centers, accelerating adoption of emerging technologies across key sectors, and contributing to the development of international 6G standards and specifications. The initiative will also work to establish a robust regulatory framework and integrated spectrum management strategy to support future telecommunications needs.

Two specialized subcommittees have been formed to support the main committee’s objectives. The Research and Development Working Group, chaired by Dr. Marwan Dabbah from Khalifa University, will oversee innovation programs, while the Integration and Strategic Partnerships Working Group, led by Dr. Khaled Al Awadhi from TDRA, will focus on collaboration with national and international stakeholders.

The establishment of the 6G Committee underscores the UAE’s commitment to technological leadership, innovation, and the creation of a sustainable knowledge-based economy. By coordinating national efforts in research, regulation, and implementation, the initiative aims to advance the country’s digital transformation and secure its position at the forefront of global communications technology.
