The collaboration is designed to address two of the biggest challenges limiting AI adoption in the region: the high cost of data and limited access to advanced AI tools.

Google  has announced a new strategic partnership between its Gemini AI platform  and Cassava Technologies  to make artificial intelligence more accessible across Africa — the world’s youngest and fastest-growing digital continent. The collaboration is designed to address two of the biggest challenges limiting AI adoption in the region: the high cost of data and limited access to advanced AI tools.

Through this partnership, eligible users will be able to access the Gemini app without consuming any of their mobile data. Cassava will leverage its extensive network of technology partners to make this possible. In addition, Google is offering a six-month free trial of its Google AI Plus plan, giving users free access to its most powerful AI models and productivity features.

A major focus of the initiative is on transforming education. Both companies envision a future where students, teachers, and parents can use AI to learn, create, and collaborate in more personalized and engaging ways. With Gemini, students can study complex topics, learn to code, and develop creative projects without worrying about running out of data. The Google AI Plus plan enhances this experience by offering tools such as NotebookLM, which turns textbooks into interactive study guides, Gemini in Google Docs to assist with writing assignments, and Google Flow for creative storytelling. The plan also provides 200GB of cloud storage to support seamless learning and collaboration.

According to both companies, the partnership represents a shared vision to democratize AI for millions across Africa’s rapidly evolving digital economies. By lowering access barriers and expanding opportunities for digital education, the Gemini–Cassava collaboration aims to empower Africa’s youth — who are already shaping global culture through art, music, and technology — to learn, build, and create with the full power of AI.
