M-PESA sustained its double-digit growth trajectory, expanding its user base to 37.9 million monthly active customers.

Safaricom PLC  has reported strong financial results for the half year ended September 2025, driven by continued growth in M-PESA, which remains at the core of the company’s revenue and innovation strategy. Service revenue in Kenya grew by 9.3% to KSh. 194.0 billion, with M-PESA contributing 45.4% or KSh. 88.1 billion of that total.

M-PESA sustained its double-digit growth trajectory, expanding its user base to 37.9 million monthly active customers. Transactions during the six-month period rose to 21.9 billion, with a total transaction value of KSh. 20.2 trillion. Notably, more than 13.2 billion of these transactions were conducted under the free M-PESA Kadogo band, underscoring the platform’s role in promoting financial inclusion.

In Ethiopia, M-PESA continued its rapid adoption, recording 8.6 million active monthly customers and 84.74 million transactions worth KSh. 11.74 billion during the period.

Merchant activity also recorded impressive growth. The total number of M-PESA merchants in Kenya reached 2.4 million, including 0.9 million Lipa Na M-PESA business tills and 1.5 million micro-merchants using Pochi La Biashara. Merchant payments value rose 15.1% to KSh. 1.2 trillion — with KSh. 1 trillion transacted through Lipa Na M-PESA and KSh. 0.2 trillion through Pochi La Biashara. The total volume of merchant transactions grew by 55.7% to 3.1 billion, reflecting increasing reliance on digital payments across sectors.

M-PESA also strengthened access to digital credit and financial empowerment, enabling more than 9.5 million customers to access over KSh. 777.5 billion in loans. This included KSh. 629.2 billion in Fuliza overdrafts, which help customers complete transactions even when funds are insufficient.

Digital engagement through the M-PESA Super App continues to grow rapidly, with more than 5.8 million customers and 347,000 businesses using the app monthly. Customers conducted over 624 million transactions valued at KSh. 1.43 trillion, while businesses processed KSh. 512.1 billion through the platform.

Building on this momentum, Safaricom plans to unify its M-PESA and telco services into a single app and introduce new innovations in credit, savings, and insurance. The upcoming M-PESA Fintech 2.0 platform will also enable the company to launch enhanced financial and business solutions, leveraging advanced technologies to meet evolving customer and enterprise needs across Africa.
