MTN Zambia and Huawei Launch Africa’s First AI-Powered Network Backup
This development establishes a new benchmark for sustainable and resilient digital networks in Africa and demonstrates the potential of AI-driven solutions to enhance energy management and ensure uninterrupted access to critical communication services.
MTN Zambia and Huawei have unveiled Africa’s first AI-powered adaptive power backup system designed to maintain network operations during prolonged electricity outages. The solution, aimed at addressing Zambia’s ongoing energy challenges, has been tested in areas with frequent power interruptions, successfully extending network uptime by up to six hours without the need for additional batteries or generators. The technology has improved network resilience by over 50%, offering a significant boost to connectivity for communities, businesses, and essential services.
The system leverages artificial intelligence to dynamically optimize power consumption, maximizing backup duration during grid failures. According to Thomas Ngoma, Acting CTO of MTN Zambia, the innovation significantly extends network uptime, while Alex Xing of Huawei emphasized that reliable connectivity should not be limited by the stability of the power grid.
This development establishes a new benchmark for sustainable and resilient digital networks in Africa and demonstrates the potential of AI-driven solutions to enhance energy management and ensure uninterrupted access to critical communication services.
