SpaceX’s Starlink Issues Urgent Update Notice to Prevent Service Disruption

The company noted that the update is necessary to maintain compatibility with the latest Starlink systems and ensure continued access to future improvements in speed, reliability, and security.

Starlink,  SpaceX’s global satellite internet service, has issued an important update notice to select customers, requiring them to update their Starlink equipment by November 17, 2025. The company said the update is part of its ongoing efforts to enhance security, performance, and reliability across its network. Customers who received the notice were informed that failure to complete the update could result in loss of internet access or permanent inoperability of their devices.

According to Starlink, the affected customers fall into two main categories. The first group includes users who must plug in their Starlink terminal by November 17, or their equipment will become permanently inoperable. The second group consists of customers who must perform a software update. Starting from November 18, these devices will not be able to connect to the internet until the update is completed.

Only customers who received an official email or in-app notification are required to take action. Each message contains a unique Starlink ID (UTID) identifying the specific kit that needs the update. Starlink clarified that an active service subscription is not required to perform the update and that users will not be charged for keeping their devices plugged in during the process.

For those who received the “Action Required: Plug in for critical update” notice, the company advised placing the Starlink terminal outside, plugging it in, and allowing the update to install automatically. This process typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes. Customers who received the “Action Required: Update Software” notification can complete the manual update by connecting to their Starlink Wi-Fi network, opening the Starlink app, and following the on-screen instructions. The update should take less than a minute to complete.

Starlink also outlined the relevant software version details for customers to determine if they are affected. Devices running versions earlier than 2024.05.0 must connect and update before November 17, or they will be permanently inoperable. Those running versions between 2024.05.0 and 2024.12.26 can sideload the update through the app but must do so before the deadline to avoid losing internet access. Devices on versions after 2024.12.26 do not require any action at this time.

The company noted that the update is necessary to maintain compatibility with the latest Starlink systems and ensure continued access to future improvements in speed, reliability, and security. Customers who are unable to access their Starlink devices before the November 17 deadline are encouraged to contact support for assistance.
