South Sudan Minister Demands MTN Provide Technical Explanation for “Prohibitively Expensive” Tariffs.
The minister made the request on Wednesday during a series of courtesy visits from colleagues, friends, relatives and representatives of telecom companies congratulating him on his recent appointment.
South Sudan’s Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny, has called on MTN to provide a technical explanation for the company’s high service tariffs, saying the current costs are placing a heavy burden on the public.
The minister made the request on Wednesday during a series of courtesy visits from colleagues, friends, relatives and representatives of telecom companies congratulating him on his recent appointment. Among the visitors were the MTN CEO and the Huawei Country Representative.
Following the meeting, Minister Ateny said the Ministry will soon hold deeper technical discussions with MTN to explore practical ways of reducing tariffs. He stressed that internet and data services remain prohibitively expensive in the country, limiting access and affecting communication for many citizens.
He added that addressing these costs will be a key priority as the Ministry works to improve digital connectivity and affordability nationwide.
