The election puts Kenya in a pole position to influence global digital policy development, enhances the county’s visibility in international forums, strengthens resource mobilization and provides direct access to global best practices.

Kenya has once again stamped its mark on the ICT global map, after being elected as the Vice Chairperson of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)  Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG).

The election took place at the just concluded World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Fred Ong’aro, Deputy Director, Fund Strategy Coordination, at the Communications Authority of Kenya, was elected to represent the African region in TDAG, a key advisory organ of the ITU-D sector.

The election puts Kenya in a pole position to influence global digital policy development, enhances the county’s visibility in international forums, strengthens resource mobilization and provides direct access to global best practices. This is the second time Kenya is holding the position of the Vice Chair of TDAG.

The WTDC is a forum of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that brings together governments, regulators, industry leaders, and development partners to set global priorities for ICT development.

Held every four years, the conference focuses on crafting strategies, programmes, and commitments that support digital transformation, expand connectivity, strengthen capacity building, and bridge the digital divide, particularly in developing countries.

This achievement is a strong reflection of the international confidence in Kenya’s ICT leadership, expertise, commitment, and longstanding contribution to the telecommunications sector.

This election reinforces CA’s growing role in advancing inclusive digital transformation across the region.

Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Hon. William Kabogo, and Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke, led Kenya’s delegation to the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) in advancing the country’s digital agenda.

Their participation underscored Kenya’s strong commitment to shaping international ICT priorities, strengthening partnerships, and advocating for increased support to accelerate digital inclusion.

Through bilateral engagements and high-level discussions, the CS and PS affirmed Kenya’s readiness to collaborate with the ITU and member states in driving programmes that enhance connectivity, innovation, and sustainable technological growth across the region.

Through WTDC, Kenya contributes to shaping international programmes that drive connectivity, capacity building, and ICT innovation, while also advocating for the needs and interests of developing countries.
