Bahrain Becomes First GCC Nation to Launch Direct-to-Device Satellite Services
This innovation is expected to significantly enhance public safety, ensuring reliable connectivity even in remote or hard-to-reach locations.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain has announced the launch of Satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) services, making the Kingdom the first country in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to implement this advanced technology. The new service enables standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites in areas where terrestrial network coverage is unavailable, including maritime zones.
This innovation is expected to significantly enhance public safety, ensuring reliable connectivity even in remote or hard-to-reach locations. By extending mobile access beyond conventional networks, Bahrain is taking a major step toward ensuring uninterrupted communication in all circumstances.
The launch aligns with TRA’s broader strategy to reinforce Bahrain’s global leadership in digital innovation and connectivity. It supports the Kingdom’s vision of a resilient, secure, and technologically advanced digital infrastructure, while further promoting the growth of a robust digital economy.
TRA’s introduction of D2D satellite services positions Bahrain as a pioneer in the region, setting a benchmark for the adoption of cutting-edge telecommunications technologies in the GCC.
