Vertiv Report Highlights AI-Driven Trends Shaping Next-Generation Data Centers

Global digital infrastructure leader Vertiv has released its latest Vertiv™ Frontiers report, detailing the technology trends and macro forces shaping the evolution of data centers, particularly in response to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI). The report highlights innovations in power, cooling, energy autonomy, and digital twin technology, which are enabling data centers to meet the demands of AI workloads.
Scott Armul, Vertiv’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, noted that the industry is evolving rapidly to meet the “density and speed of deployment demands of AI factories.” He highlighted transformative trends including higher-voltage DC power architectures, advanced liquid cooling, on-site energy generation, and digital twin technology, all of which are critical for supporting gigawatt-scale AI deployments.
The report identifies several macro forces driving innovation: extreme densification accelerated by AI and high-performance computing workloads; rapid gigawatt-scale deployments; treating the data center as a single unit of compute; and silicon diversification, which requires infrastructure to adapt to an expanding variety of chips and compute resources.
From these macro forces, Vertiv highlights five key trends shaping the data center landscape:
- Powering up for AI – Traditional hybrid AC/DC power systems are under strain due to increased AI workloads. Transitioning to higher-voltage DC architectures reduces inefficiencies, centralizes power conversion, and supports higher rack densities, while on-site power generation and microgrids further enhance adoption.
- Distributed AI – As AI adoption grows, businesses will require flexible deployment of AI inference services. Highly regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare, and defense may maintain private or hybrid AI environments, leveraging high-density power and liquid cooling to support both new builds and retrofitted facilities.
- Energy autonomy accelerates – Power availability challenges are driving investments in extended on-site energy generation, including natural gas turbines and other technologies, ensuring reliable operations for AI-intensive data centers. Concepts like Bring Your Own Power (and Cooling) are becoming part of long-term energy strategies.
- Digital twin-driven design and operations – Digital twin technology allows AI-powered virtual mapping and specification of data centers, often using prefabricated modular designs. This reduces deployment time by up to 50%, enabling gigawatt-scale buildouts required for AI expansion.
- Adaptive, resilient liquid cooling – Liquid cooling is increasingly critical for AI workloads. Using AI to optimize and predict cooling system performance enhances reliability and uptime, ensuring the protection of high-value hardware and associated workloads.
