Cloudflare Acquires Astro Team to Strengthen High-Performance Web Framework
The acquisition aims to reinforce Astro as the go-to framework for high-performance websites, particularly those focused on content delivery.
Cloudflare, Inc., a leading connectivity cloud company, has announced that the team behind the Astro web framework, The Astro Technology Company, will be joining Cloudflare. Astro, a popular JavaScript framework, is widely used by major brands including Unilever, Visa, and NBC News, as well as hundreds of thousands of developers, to build fast, content-driven websites.
Under Cloudflare’s stewardship, Astro will remain open source, ensuring long-term growth and continued innovation for the framework. The acquisition aims to reinforce Astro as the go-to framework for high-performance websites, particularly those focused on content delivery.
Astro’s unique approach ensures that only the essential code required to render a page is loaded, enhancing speed and performance. This is increasingly important as search engines prioritize fast-loading pages and users expect near-instant website experiences.
Matthew Prince, Cloudflare CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to open-source tools, stating that protecting and investing in such frameworks is critical for a healthy and free Internet. Fred Schott, CEO of The Astro Technology Company, highlighted that joining Cloudflare would accelerate development, allowing Astro to scale faster while continuing to serve developers regardless of hosting platform.
Astro also powers platforms like Webflow and Wix, which already operate on Cloudflare. The team recently released the beta of Astro 6, introducing support for additional JavaScript runtimes, improved performance, and faster build times. Cloudflare plans to continue supporting open-source contributions through the Astro Ecosystem Fund in collaboration with partners including Webflow, Netlify, Wix, and Sentry.
This acquisition signals Cloudflare’s dedication to building the future of fast, efficient, and developer-friendly web experiences, while ensuring the continued growth of a widely adopted open-source framework.
