Oromia Bank and Visa Sign Strategic Partnership to Expand Digital Payments in Ethiopia

Under the agreement, Oromia Bank customers will be able to make payments and access services using the Oromia Bank International Payment Visa Card.

Oromia Bank  has signed a memorandum of understanding with Visa  Incorporated, marking the start of a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening international and digital payment services for customers in Ethiopia.

The agreement was signed by Obo Teferi Mekonne, Chief Executive Officer of Oromia Bank, and Obo Jared, Visa Incorporated’s East Africa Zone and Ethiopian Operations Manager.

Commenting on the partnership, Obo Teferi Mekonne said the collaboration will support Oromia Bank’s plans to expand modern, convenient, and streamlined international payment card services, enhancing customer access to global payment solutions.

Obo Jared welcomed the partnership, noting that Visa’s international experience will contribute to the modernization of Ethiopia’s payment ecosystem and support the country’s shift toward digital financial services.

Under the agreement, Oromia Bank customers will be able to make payments and access services using the Oromia Bank International Payment Visa Card. The partnership will also enable e-commerce and online transactions, as well as introduce digital remittance options that allow Ethiopians in the diaspora to send money securely to family and friends back home.

The collaboration reflects ongoing efforts to expand digital payments, improve financial accessibility, and modernize Ethiopia’s financial infrastructure.
