Ghana Launches Code4Food Security Fellowship to Drive Digital Innovation
Describing the Fellowship as a strategic partnership, Hon. Nartey George said it complements government efforts to deepen AI adoption, strengthen public-private collaboration and position Ghana as a regional leader in responsible and applied digital innovation.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations , Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has launched the Code4Food Security Fellowship in Accra, describing the initiative as a key intervention aligned with Ghana’s digitalisation drive and national development agenda.
The Fellowship was launched on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the Ghana–India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE). Speaking at the event, the Minister said the programme supports government’s vision of building a productive, inclusive and technology-driven economy under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
Hon. Nartey George emphasised that digital innovation, data science and artificial intelligence are increasingly critical to economic growth, food security and national security. He noted that the application of digital solutions across sectors such as agriculture, logistics, climate monitoring and food systems is essential to addressing Ghana’s food security challenges.
He highlighted recent progress by the Ministry, including the integration of early warning systems into the Ghana Meteorological Agency’s platform, which now provides credible data to support planning and evidence-based decision-making. According to the Minister, the growing importance of food security as a national security issue makes initiatives like Code4Food both timely and strategic.
The Minister also linked the Fellowship to the government’s One Million Coders Programme, which seeks to equip young people with foundational and advanced digital skills in areas including data science, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. He explained that Code4Food serves as a proof-of-concept, demonstrating how participants from large-scale training initiatives can progress into specialised fellowships, innovation pathways and enterprise development.
Describing the Fellowship as a strategic partnership, Hon. Nartey George said it complements government efforts to deepen AI adoption, strengthen public-private collaboration and position Ghana as a regional leader in responsible and applied digital innovation.
He expressed appreciation to all partners supporting the Code4Food Security Fellowship and reaffirmed government’s commitment to expanding digital skills, nurturing innovation ecosystems and ensuring technology plays a direct role in advancing Ghana’s development priorities.
