Topics covered included the principles of personal data processing, lawful bases for processing, and cross-border data transfers, among other key areas.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)  has held a Media Chat and Capacity Building Workshop in Lagos as part of activities marking National Privacy Week, aimed at strengthening journalists’ understanding of data protection and privacy issues.

The training brought together media partners to deepen knowledge of the data protection ecosystem and promote accurate, responsible reporting on privacy-related matters. Topics covered included the principles of personal data processing, lawful bases for processing, and cross-border data transfers, among other key areas.

Speaking virtually at the event, National Commissioner/CEO Dr. Vincent Olatunji commended media partners for their continued support in raising public awareness about data protection and privacy. He highlighted the Commission’s achievements, noting the creation of approximately 23,000 jobs and the growth of Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem, now valued at about ₦16.2 billion.

Dr. Olatunji also pointed to the NDPC’s recognition as the Most Outstanding Data Protection Authority at the Picasso Awards last year, and encouraged the media to maintain their support for the Commission’s mandate.

The initiative underscores NDPC’s commitment to collaboration with the media as a key stakeholder group in promoting data privacy awareness and strengthening Nigeria’s digital governance landscape.
