The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in developing national frameworks for AI, accelerating digital transformation within the public sector, and enhancing digital governance.

UNESCO  and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services  are deepening their partnership to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformation initiatives in the country. The engagement took place yesterday during a high-level meeting between UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Dr. Tawfik Jelassi, and the Honourable Minister of ICT.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in developing national frameworks for AI, accelerating digital transformation within the public sector, and enhancing digital governance. Dr. Jelassi said the visit was intended to review progress made in ongoing initiatives and identify opportunities to reinforce mutually beneficial collaboration.

“Our discussions covered artificial intelligence and national policy frameworks, digital transformation in the public sector, the regulation and governance of digital platforms, and the development of digital skills for both youth and adults,” Dr. Jelassi noted. He also highlighted the urgent need for digital literacy, observing that many people spend significant time on social media and digital platforms without the skills to address issues such as misinformation, disinformation, and harmful online content.”

The Minister of ICT emphasized the transformative potential of AI and emerging technologies in shaping government operations and national development. She underscored the importance of research, innovation, and collaboration with academic and technical institutions to develop sustainable technological solutions.

The meeting also explored strategies for integrating emerging technologies into broader digital transformation frameworks and promoting forward-looking projects to enhance Zimbabwe’s national competitiveness. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in digital governance, skills development, and technological innovation.

This engagement is part of Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to position itself as a key player in the digital economy while ensuring responsible and inclusive technology development.
