Zambia Secures IMF Funding for 300 New Towers as Kapiri Mposhi Gets Digital Boost
Minister Mutati highlighted that four towers have been built within Kapiri Mposhi District, while fourteen towers have been deployed across Central Province.
The Kapiri Mposhi Telecommunications Tower was officially inaugurated on 13 February 2026, with the ceremony led by the Honourable Minister of Technology and Science, Mr. Felix C. Mutati, MP. The Minister commended IHS for constructing a state-of-the-art telecommunications tower that has significantly improved network coverage and quality of life for residents of Kapiri Mposhi and beyond.
The tower currently serves over 7,000 people, delivering uninterrupted digital and mobile services around the clock. According to Eng. Otun Adekune, IHS Director of Operations, the tower operates independently of the national electricity grid, powered by a combination of generators, lithium batteries, and solar energy. The generator charges the batteries, which provide long-lasting power, while the solar system acts as a backup to ensure continuous service.
Minister Mutati highlighted that four towers have been built within Kapiri Mposhi District, while fourteen towers have been deployed across Central Province. This infrastructure has enhanced connectivity, enabling more efficient digital and mobile money transactions, and improving the livelihoods of farmers, traders, and marketeers.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment, under the vision of His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, to ensure all citizens have access to reliable network services. In line with this, USD 100 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been secured to fund the construction of 300 additional telecommunications towers nationwide.
At the event, District Commissioner Mr. Hasalama expressed appreciation to the President and the Ministry for prioritizing the district’s digital infrastructure. The Minister assured residents that additional towers will be deployed to ensure full coverage and equitable access to digital services, supporting initiatives such as mobile digital businesses, social cash transfers, and the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP). He urged the community to protect the infrastructure, emphasizing its importance as a key investment by the New Dawn Government.
