China Grants Malawi $43 Million for Capital Hill Digitisation and M1 Road Expansion
The digitisation project is expected to modernise public service systems, enhance efficiency, and improve service delivery across ministries and departments.
Malawi has secured a significant financial boost after the Chinese Government, through its Ambassador to Malawi, Lu Xu, awarded a USD43 million grant as part of New Year celebrations. The announcement was made by Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, who described the development as a major step forward for the country’s infrastructure and digital transformation agenda.
According to Mwanamvekha, the grant will support the realisation of former President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s vision to digitise Capital Hill, the seat of Malawi’s government operations. The digitisation project is expected to modernise public service systems, enhance efficiency, and improve service delivery across ministries and departments.
In addition, part of the funding will be allocated to the expansion of the M1 Road into a dual carriageway from Kanengo to Kamuzu International Airport. The road upgrade is aimed at improving traffic flow, boosting trade and connectivity, and supporting economic growth, particularly in and around Lilongwe.
The grant underscores the strengthening bilateral relations between Malawi and China, with infrastructure development and digital transformation remaining central pillars of cooperation between the two nations.
