2 min read

The agreement is set to significantly strengthen nationwide connectivity, expand digital inclusion, and enhance network capacity, coverage, and service quality.

On the sidelines of Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, Ethio telecom  CEO Frehiwot Tamru and the company’s executive leadership finalized a major network expansion and modernization agreement with ZTE Corporation,  covering 647 network sites—including 115 rural sites—across Ethiopia.

The agreement is set to significantly strengthen nationwide connectivity, expand digital inclusion, and enhance network capacity, coverage, and service quality. Upon completion, 4G population coverage will increase to 95.5%, providing millions more citizens, communities, and businesses with reliable high-speed connectivity. The initiative also extends advanced mobile broadband services to underserved and rural areas, further accelerating Ethiopia’s digital transformation.

The milestone was achieved following strategic discussions between Ethio telecom and ZTE’s headquarters management, alongside ZTE’s dedicated leadership team supporting the project. Both parties also explored long-term strategies aligned with Ethio telecom’s corporate vision, “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028.”

The collaboration underscores the long-standing partnership between Ethio telecom and ZTE, reflecting their shared commitment to building modern, resilient, and future-ready telecommunications infrastructure. The project is expected to support Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation agenda, enabling innovative digital services and empowering communities, institutions, and businesses nationwide.

Ethio telecom continues to prioritize advanced technologies and strategic partnerships as key drivers in positioning Ethiopia as a leading digital hub in Africa.
