Google Expands AI Capabilities to Support Local Languages Across Africa
By adding local languages, Google is helping communities across Africa actively use AI for education, business, and creative projects, promoting inclusivity in technology.
Google has rolled out AI Overviews and AI Mode in 13 African languages, allowing users across the continent to search, learn, and create in their own languages. The tools aim to make AI more accessible and culturally relevant beyond English.
AI Overviews delivers concise summaries with links for deeper reading, while AI Mode enables interactive engagement through text, voice, or images, providing tailored responses. This expansion builds on insights from Google’s Waxal project, which uses machine learning, linguistic research, and community input to improve AI understanding of African languages.
The newly supported languages include Afrikaans, Akan, Amharic, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, Somali, Sesotho, Kiswahili, Setswana, Wolof, Yorùbá, and isiZulu. Users can access AI Mode through the Google app on Android or iOS and interact in their preferred language.
