Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has announced that Cabinet has approved the publication of South Africa’s draft artificial intelligence (AI) policy for public comment. The move marks a significant step toward shaping how the country governs and adopts AI technologies in the years ahead.
According to the Minister, the policy is designed to ensure that both the benefits and risks of AI are fairly distributed across society and future generations. It also aims to strengthen government’s ability to regulate AI responsibly while fostering local innovation, supporting job creation, and expanding access to AI-related skills.
The draft framework is built around six key pillars, including capacity and talent development, inclusive economic growth, responsible governance, ethical and inclusive AI, cultural preservation with international alignment, and human-centred deployment. These pillars are intended to guide the development and deployment of AI in a way that aligns with national priorities and global standards.
Ntshavheni noted that the policy adopts a phased approach, recognising that AI risks and applications vary across sectors. This approach will allow for more tailored implementation as the country navigates the evolving AI landscape.
