CRAN and Telecom Namibia Sign Phase 2 USF Deal to Expand Rural Connectivity
Under the agreement, Telecom Namibia will construct three new network sites to improve mobile and data coverage in areas where connectivity remains limited.
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), in partnership with Telecom Namibia , has officially signed a Phase 2 Universal Service Fund (USF) agreement aimed at accelerating digital inclusion and expanding connectivity in rural and underserved communities.
Under the agreement, Telecom Namibia will construct three new network sites to improve mobile and data coverage in areas where connectivity remains limited. The initiative is designed to strengthen the country’s national telecommunications infrastructure while closing the digital gap between urban and rural populations.
The project includes a N$9.8 million subsidy to support infrastructure deployment, alongside the establishment of new Radio Access Network (RAN) sites to extend coverage into remote regions. As part of the social impact commitments, schools and health facilities in the targeted areas will receive free connectivity services for a period of seven years.
According to CRAN, the partnership aligns with Namibia’s 2024–2027 digital infrastructure development goals, which prioritize universal access to communication services and inclusive digital transformation. The initiative is expected to improve access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities by enabling more reliable and affordable connectivity for remote communities.
Officials emphasized that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that no Namibian is left behind in the digital age, reinforcing efforts to build a more connected and digitally inclusive society.
