NDPC and CIoD Sign MoU to Strengthen Data Protection and Corporate Governance in Nigeria

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)  has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria (CIoD)  to strengthen collaboration on data protection awareness, compliance, and governance within corporate leadership structures.

The agreement was formalised at the NDPC headquarters as part of the Commission’s broader strategic roadmap focused on partnership and institutional cooperation. According to the National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model remains central to advancing data protection in Nigeria, particularly in improving compliance across organisations. He noted that data protection awareness must extend beyond professional bodies to the wider organisations they represent in order to build trust and credibility in the digital ecosystem.

The Director-General of the Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria, Dr Taiwo Alausa, expressed appreciation for the collaboration and reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to supporting data protection principles among directors and corporate leaders.

As part of the agreement, both institutions established an implementation team tasked with developing actionable plans and ensuring immediate execution of the MoU. The partnership is expected to strengthen compliance culture, enhance corporate governance, and deepen awareness of data protection standards across Nigeria’s business environment.

The collaboration also reinforces the mandate of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission in promoting data privacy, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement within both public and private sectors.
