Ethiopia Highlights Data Sovereignty as Foundation for Policy Independence

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has reaffirmed the importance of data sovereignty and domestically driven information systems as critical pillars for national development and policy independence.
Speaking during a national conference and exhibition held under the theme “Data Sovereignty for Policy Autonomy,” the Prime Minister praised Ethiopia’s progress in strengthening its information and statistical capabilities, describing the achievements as a major milestone in the country’s journey toward data and statistical sovereignty.
According to Abiy Ahmed, the conference highlighted significant advancements in Ethiopia’s ability to collect, analyse, and manage data using local expertise and national institutions. He emphasized that in today’s world, data has become a strategic national asset and a key foundation for building a strong and sovereign state.
The Prime Minister noted that relying on externally sourced or foreign-controlled data cannot adequately support Ethiopia’s national aspirations and policy priorities. He stressed that building domestic capacity for data collection and analysis is essential for ensuring policy autonomy and strengthening national decision-making.
Abiy Ahmed also underscored the importance of local knowledge and expertise in driving Ethiopia’s digital and statistical transformation. He described the increasing role of Ethiopian professionals in data collection and analysis as a source of national pride.
Beyond quantitative indicators, the Prime Minister stated that the country’s data strategy should remain people-centered and focused on delivering tangible improvements in the lives of citizens. He emphasized that information systems should not only measure performance but also contribute to real social and economic impact.
The event brought together stakeholders from across Ethiopia’s data, statistics, and governance sectors to showcase progress in information management, digital systems, and evidence-based policymaking as part of the country’s broader national development agenda.
