New PLA Cohort Tackles Real-World Problems to Advance Africa’s Product Economy

Through its model, PLA aims to localise this methodology for African enterprises and startups seeking to solve complex continental challenges through innovation and structured execution.

As the global community marks World Product Day, a major shift is emerging across Africa’s enterprise ecosystem. The Product Leadership Accelerator (PLA) , an initiative of the Innovate Africa Foundation, says it is redefining how value is created and scaled by transforming African enterprises from traditional service providers into product-led growth engines.

The programme positions itself as a bridge between legacy business models and the modern Product Operating Model—an approach used by global technology companies such as Apple, Netflix, and Amazon. Through its model, PLA aims to localise this methodology for African enterprises and startups seeking to solve complex continental challenges through innovation and structured execution.

 

Building a Pan-African Product Leadership Pipeline

The PLA is currently running its 2026 Accelerator Programme, a 12-week cohort featuring 48 product managers from 13 African countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa, and Kenya. The cohort reflects a strong focus on inclusion, with women making up approximately 54% of participants.

Participants work on real-world problem statements across multiple industries while receiving mentorship from senior product practitioners from organisations including Interswitch, Netflix, Amazon, Microsoft, Paystack, and mPesa. The programme also includes strategic guidance from global product experts Marty Cagan and SVPG partner Christian Idiodi.

“Building in Africa requires a distinct level of empathy, adaptability, and mastery of the product operating model. We empower leaders and enterprises to harness tools like AI while offering them strategic product management advisory. Our goal is to support companies in adopting a product-led culture which drives sustainable economic growth. By mitigating risks before investing significant capital or public resources, we help both enterprises and startups create solutions that truly meet market and consumer needs.”

Enterprise Transformation and Corporate Impact

Beyond training, PLA’s work extends into enterprise advisory, helping organisations across telecoms, FMCG, retail, finance, commerce, and government transition from project-based delivery models to outcome-driven product cultures.

Afrinvest is cited as a key example of this transformation.

According to the PLA, similar sentiment is shared by partners including Insight7, One Cluster, and Agile Product Management, who see the initiative as a driver of digital maturity across the continent.

The organisation also highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in accelerating product development and improving execution efficiency across African enterprises.

 

De-Risking African-Built Solutions

For founders and product leaders, PLA says the focus is on reducing execution risk while improving product discovery and delivery capabilities.

Programme Reach and Impact

According to PLA, the programme’s impact is reflected in several key metrics:

  • 13 countries represented in the 2026 cohort, including Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon
  • Over 54% female representation in the cohort
  • Dozens of scholarships provided through the Innovate Africa Foundation for SVPG Masterclasses, leading to career advancement and executive transitions
  • A 3-city product tour covering Lagos, Nairobi, and Cape Town

Founded by Christian Idiodi, partner at Silicon Valley Product Group, the PLA is built on the belief that combining world-class product thinking with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence is essential to solving Africa’s most complex challenges.

By equipping product leaders with global best practices, mentorship, and practical tools, the initiative aims to strengthen Africa’s capacity to build scalable, market-driven digital solutions.
