The emerging interest in satellite connectivity adds a new dimension to this roadmap, potentially complementing terrestrial networks as Malawi advances toward a more digitally enabled economy under Vision 2063.

Airtel Malawi Plc  has signaled growing interest in satellite connectivity as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen network resilience and expand digital access across Malawi, even as it reported robust financial growth and expanded infrastructure investments for the 2025 financial year.

The discussion around satellite connectivity comes as the telecom operator intensifies efforts to bridge coverage gaps in hard-to-reach areas and reinforce its existing mobile and broadband infrastructure. While continuing to scale terrestrial networks, the company is increasingly exploring next-generation connectivity solutions to support Malawi’s digital transformation ambitions.

Speaking during the company’s 27th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mzuzu on May 15, 2026, Chairperson Kayisi Sadala described 2025 as a year of disciplined execution and sustained investment in national connectivity. Managing Director Aashish Dutt reaffirmed the company’s focus on improving network resilience, customer experience, and alignment with Malawi’s broader economic and digital development goals.

The AGM also highlighted strong financial performance. Airtel Malawi reported a 34% rise in gross revenue, driven by increased customer uptake and higher usage across its services. EBITDA grew by 29.4%, while profit before tax surged by 54.9%, despite ongoing macroeconomic pressures.

Shareholders approved a dividend payout of MK38.5 billion, representing a 75% increase and translating to MK3.50 per share for the 2025 financial year.

On the operational side, the company invested MK50.8 billion in network expansion, rolling out 58 new sites and extending its 5G footprint to 111 sites across 10 districts. These investments were positioned as central to improving connectivity and supporting digital inclusion nationwide.

Airtel Malawi noted that hosting the AGM in Mzuzu was intended to strengthen engagement with its more than 8,000 shareholders and reinforce inclusivity across its investor base.

Looking ahead, the company said its strategy will continue to prioritize infrastructure expansion, digital innovation, and enhanced customer experience. The emerging interest in satellite connectivity adds a new dimension to this roadmap, potentially complementing terrestrial networks as Malawi advances toward a more digitally enabled economy under Vision 2063.
