NIMC emphasized that the broader DPI strategy is designed to promote transparency, accountability, and interoperability across Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem, while enabling more efficient access to government services.

The National Identity Management Commission (National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) ) has restated its commitment to advancing a robust and inclusive Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) ecosystem aimed at improving governance, strengthening national security, and enhancing public service delivery across Nigeria.

Speaking at a digital conference in Abuja themed “Building Africa’s Digital Foundations Together,” the NIMC Director-General and CEO, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote (represented at the event by Mr. Sulaiman Falade, Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases), said the commission is driving Nigeria’s DPI agenda through institutional reforms, inter-agency collaboration, and secure digital identity systems.

A key component of this effort is the National Identification Number (NIN), which NIMC described as central to digital authentication, identity verification, and access to both public and private sector services. The initiative aligns with a Presidential directive issued on April 5, 2024, mandating Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to fully integrate NIN into identity verification, biometric authentication, and data capture processes across digital services.

According to the commission, foundational digital infrastructure such as the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI) is also being deployed to strengthen trust in online transactions, improve data protection, and support secure digital interactions nationwide.

NIMC emphasized that the broader DPI strategy is designed to promote transparency, accountability, and interoperability across Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem, while enabling more efficient access to government services.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to build a secure and resilient digital identity framework and called on stakeholders in both the public and private sectors to support ongoing implementation efforts aimed at improving service delivery outcomes for Nigerians.
