The partnership reflects increasing efforts by Nigerian regulators to strengthen institutional cooperation around digital governance, privacy protection, and the responsible use of data as the country’s technology and media sectors continue to evolve.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC)  has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC)  as part of efforts to strengthen data protection and privacy practices across Nigeria’s digital and broadcasting sectors.

The agreement formalises collaboration between both regulatory agencies and marks another step in the NDPC’s broader mandate to deepen data governance and privacy standards in the country’s growing digital economy.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, commended the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the NBC, Charles Ebuebu, for fostering inter-agency collaboration. He noted that the responsibilities of both organisations cut across multiple sectors of the economy, making partnership essential in advancing privacy protection and responsible data management.

Dr Olatunji said the collaboration would help strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s digital economy while supporting the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to him, improved data protection frameworks are increasingly important as digital services continue to expand across industries.

In his remarks, NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu praised the NDPC for what he described as its proactive approach to data governance and regulatory development in Nigeria. He emphasised that data now plays a critical role in shaping digital broadcasting, particularly through algorithms used by streaming platforms and digital content services.

Ebuebu added that the partnership with the NDPC would enhance the NBC’s ability to regulate Nigeria’s broadcasting ecosystem in line with international standards and evolving global best practices around digital privacy and data usage.

As part of the agreement, both organisations have established a joint working group tasked with driving the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding and coordinating collaborative initiatives between the two agencies.

The partnership reflects increasing efforts by Nigerian regulators to strengthen institutional cooperation around digital governance, privacy protection, and the responsible use of data as the country’s technology and media sectors continue to evolve.
