Malawi Government Unveils $180m Digital Transformation Project with Huawei
Officials say the investment is intended to modernize governance, improve access to public services, and strengthen nationwide digital connectivity as part of Malawi’s broader digital transformation agenda.
The Government of Malawi has announced a major collaboration with Huawei on a $180 million national ICT investment plan aimed at transforming public service delivery and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure over the next four years.
The announcement was made as the Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, is currently in China working with Huawei to advance the initiative, which is structured around two key strategic pillars.
The first pillar focuses on the development of a one-stop digital government platform. This unified online portal will allow citizens to access a wide range of government services in one place, including applications for passports, business registration, and tax payments, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing administrative delays.
The second pillar centers on national connectivity. It involves the deployment of a high-speed network designed to connect all 28 districts across Malawi. The system will include ring protection technology to enhance resilience, ensuring that service disruptions do not occur even if a single cable is damaged or cut.
