Smart Africa and AFNIC Partner to Strengthen Africa’s Internet Infrastructure
Under the partnership, the two organisations will work together to build the capacity of African country code top-level domain (ccTLD) operators, helping to strengthen the management and sustainability of national internet domain registries across the continent.
Smart Africa has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AFNIC to strengthen Africa’s internet infrastructure through enhanced collaboration on domain name management, cybersecurity and technical capacity building.
The agreement was signed in Geneva by Smart Africa’s Chief Executive Officer, Lacina Koné, and AFNIC Director General, Pierre Bonis.
Under the partnership, the two organisations will work together to build the capacity of African country code top-level domain (ccTLD) operators, helping to strengthen the management and sustainability of national internet domain registries across the continent.
The collaboration will also focus on enhancing the security and resilience of the Domain Name System (DNS), a critical component of internet infrastructure that enables users to access websites and online services reliably and securely.
In addition, the MoU aims to accelerate the modernisation of internet registries across Africa, supporting the adoption of advanced technologies and best practices to improve the performance, security and efficiency of domain name management.
Smart Africa said the agreement represents a strategic step towards building a more secure, resilient and modern internet ecosystem for Africa, while supporting the continent’s broader digital transformation agenda through stronger technical capabilities and improved internet governance.
