Gabon and TikTok Strengthen Cooperation on Online Content Governance
The Gabonese government noted that, following the country's ratification of the ordinance governing social media regulation, both parties agreed to continue working together over the next 12 months to ensure the platform complies with the new regulatory requirements.
The Government of Gabon has continued its engagement with TikTok on digital platform governance, holding high-level discussions during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The meeting, led by Minister of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation Mark Alexandre Doumba, brought together senior TikTok executives responsible for the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Central Asia (MEA) region. The discussions reviewed progress made since earlier exchanges following the suspension of digital platforms in February 2026 and explored conditions for renewed cooperation within a legal and regulatory framework.
During the meeting, TikTok presented the results of its content moderation efforts for the first quarter of 2026. The platform reported removing 23,504 accounts linked to sexual content, 13,930 accounts for violent content and threats to the safety and well-being of minors, and 10,784 accounts related to goods, services and regulated activities. The largest category of removals involved content related to child sexual abuse, with 17,225 accounts removed, followed by content involving sexual exploitation of minors, with 12,883 accounts.
TikTok also reported that 99.8% of content found to violate its policies was removed before it was reported by users, while 92.9% of such content received no views before removal. In addition, 97.2% of content removed from the platform was taken down within 24 hours, and 99.8% was removed within 48 hours.

The discussions also underscored the government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ mental health from the risks associated with social media, including disinformation, cyberbullying, hate speech and other harmful online content, as Gabon continues to strengthen its digital governance framework.
