Madagascar Launches 5.5G Pilot, Becomes Fourth Country Globally to Test Technology

Madagascar has officially launched a pilot of 5.5G technology, becoming the fourth country in the world to begin testing the next-generation mobile network as it seeks to accelerate digital transformation and unlock new opportunities for innovation and economic growth.

The pilot was officially launched during a press briefing hosted by Yas Madagascar in Andraharo, attended by Madagascar’s Minister of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications, Mahefa Andriamampiadana. During the event, the minister commended Yas Madagascar and its partners for driving the deployment of the country’s latest digital infrastructure initiative.

The government said the introduction of 5.5G represents another milestone in Madagascar’s digital development, positioning the country among the early adopters of emerging telecommunications technologies. Authorities noted that the initiative demonstrates Madagascar’s commitment to participating actively in the global evolution of digital technologies.

The new 5.5G technology is expected to deliver faster speeds, greater efficiency and enhanced intelligence compared with previous mobile network generations. The government said the technology has the potential to support advanced applications across artificial intelligence, industry, healthcare, agriculture, education and digital public services.

Officials stressed that the country’s objective extends beyond being an early adopter of new technology. Instead, Madagascar aims to translate technological advancement into tangible economic benefits by attracting investment, creating jobs, improving competitiveness and enhancing the quality of life for citizens. The government said digital technologies should enable people to access better education, employment opportunities, healthcare services, productivity tools and more efficient public services.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for digital growth by promoting fair competition, encouraging investment and expanding digital infrastructure. These efforts will be accompanied by measures to safeguard security, ensure digital inclusion and strengthen the country’s digital sovereignty.

Looking ahead, the government said the success of the 5.5G initiative will be measured not only by faster network performance but by its ability to stimulate the creation of new businesses, generate employment opportunities, improve digital services and empower Madagascar’s youth through innovation. The long-term goal is to build a more connected, innovative and economically developed Madagascar.
