The launch expands M-PESA Ethiopia's portfolio of everyday digital financial services, making utility payments more accessible through a fast, secure, and digital payment experience.

M-PESA Ethiopia  has introduced a new prepaid electricity payment service that enables customers with Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) Smart Meter devices to purchase electricity directly through the M-PESA Super App.

The new feature allows users to top up their prepaid electricity accounts without visiting physical service centers, providing a more convenient way to access the essential utility service from anywhere. To use the service, customers must first update their M-PESA Super App to the latest version.

Once updated, users can access the feature by selecting Pay with M-PESA, tapping Pay Utility, choosing Ethiopian Electric Utility (Prepaid), and entering their Contract Account Number. Customers can then choose to purchase electricity either by entering an amount in Ethiopian Birr (ETB) or by selecting the desired electricity units (kWh). After confirming the transaction, the app instantly generates a 20-digit electricity token, which can be entered into the Smart Meter to complete the top-up.

The launch expands M-PESA Ethiopia’s portfolio of everyday digital financial services, making utility payments more accessible through a fast, secure, and digital payment experience. By enabling prepaid electricity purchases via mobile, the company aims to simplify day-to-day transactions while reducing the need for customers to visit service points during business hours.

The addition of prepaid Ethiopian Electric Utility payments marks another step in M-PESA Ethiopia’s efforts to strengthen its digital payments ecosystem by bringing essential services closer to customers through convenient mobile-based solutions.
